Staying in central San Juan
Central San Juan is the band of city between Old San Juan and Condado: the Convention Center district in Isla Grande, Puerta de Tierra at the eastern end of the old city's island, and the older residential streets of Miramar and Santurce. Staying here puts the colonial city and the beaches close at hand, which makes it a practical base for a convention, a concert or a first trip that mixes both. Old San Juan is about 9 minutes away by car.
Around the Convention Center
The Puerto Rico Convention Center opened in 2005, and Distrito T-Mobile beside it adds restaurants, an IMAX cinema, an outdoor stage, an urban park with a zip line, and the Coca-Cola Music Hall, one of its two live-music venues. From the homes near the district the restaurants are within 9 minutes on foot, so a late show ends with a short walk home. The small Isla Grande airport, where flights to Vieques and Culebra leave, is in the same part of the city.
Puerta de Tierra and the water
Puerta de Tierra is the strip of the island just east of the old walls, home to the Capitol of Puerto Rico and many government buildings, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 2019. Balneario El Escambrón, at its eastern end beside Luis Muñoz Rivera Park, has a calm, shallow swimming area behind natural rock formations and lifeguards on duty. Homes in Puerta de Tierra are within about 8 minutes' walk of it.
Parking and getting around
Parking depends on the building: the apartments by the Convention Center come with on-site parking and an access tag, while homes on older streets rely on free street parking under the city's posted rules. Taxis and rideshare are easy to find throughout this part of San Juan. The airport is about 13 minutes by car. From the homes further inland, allow about 12 minutes to the airport and 11 minutes to Old San Juan.

Central San Juan suits convention and concert visitors, first-timers who want Old San Juan and the beach each a short hop away, and drivers who want a parking space included. It suits less well anyone who wants cobblestones outside the door or sand at the end of the street; for those, Old San Juan, Condado or Ocean Park are the better match. The apartment buildings by the Convention Center have lifts, a help if stairs are hard for you. Hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30.

Great place to stay in Old San Juan. House has a ton of historic character. There are plenty of nearby restaurants/bars. You can walk to the cruise terminals or the forts. The balcony is a huge plus as well. Would definitely stay here again!
Location was wonderful. Right in the middle of OSJ! Beautiful place with just the right amount of space. Clean apt and cute amenities like first floor balconies and a loft upstairs. Will definitely book here again
