Staying in Dorado

Staying in Dorado means quiet days at the pool and on the sand, evenings at home or in the town plaza, and a car for everything else.

The villas here sit inside the gated Dorado del Mar community, a short walk from the beach. Guests share a pool and a residents-only gate onto the sand, security patrols the grounds around the clock, and the community's rules on noise, wristbands and parking apply to visitors too.

Beaches and the sea

Dorado's public beach, Balneario Manuel “Nolo” Morales at Playa Sardinera, is close by to the west. Discover Puerto Rico lists restrooms, showers, parking and on-duty lifeguards there, with palms shading much of the shore. Ojo del Buey, named after a rock shaped like an ox's head, is another calm beach, while Kikita draws surfers, especially in winter. This coast faces the open Atlantic, and the sea around the island is usually gentlest from May to August.

You will need a car

Shops, restaurants, the plaza and the other beaches are spread out, and rideshare cars can be scarce late at night, so plan on renting a car; the villas have parking inside the gates. The airport is about 39 minutes by car and Old San Juan about 39 minutes by car. In town, the Casa del Rey museum and the plaza's local restaurants are worth an evening. Finca Gaia runs guided walks through native forest in the karst hills.

Day trips west

Dorado is the nearer base for the karst country and the coast west of San Juan. Mar Chiquita in Manatí is a cove where two limestone outcrops leave a half-moon opening to the Atlantic; take an umbrella, as there is little shade. The drive there is about 37 minutes from the homes here, 13 fewer than from Old San Juan.

Hacienda La Esperanza, also in Manatí, is a former sugar plantation that is now the largest nature reserve on the north coast, and its visitor centre keeps the only steam-powered sugar mill of its kind still in existence. It is about 49 minutes away by car.

Cueva Ventana, the window cave on a limestone cliff above the Río Grande de Arecibo valley, is privately owned and visited on a guided tour. The drive is about 54 minutes. Check tour days before you set out.

Power and storms

From June 1 to the end of November it is hurricane season. Check each villa's page for backup power: where there is no generator, a brief island power cut can pause the air conditioning and wifi until the supply returns.

Who it suits

Dorado suits families and groups who want space, a pool and a quiet base, golfers, and anyone happy to drive into San Juan for a night out. It is a poor fit for travellers without a car, for nightlife on foot, and for anyone who wants to be in Old San Juan every day. For El Yunque and the east coast, Luquillo is the closer base.
