Staying in Carolina

Carolina is the municipality immediately east of San Juan, and it holds both SJU, Puerto Rico's main international airport, and the Isla Verde beach district. Staying in Carolina means short airport runs and, depending on the home, either sand outside the building or a quiet residential street a short drive inland.

Isla Verde takes its name from a small cay and reef just offshore. Its hotels and condos line the beach with the airport directly behind them. From Isla Verde the terminal is about 8 minutes by car and Old San Juan about 16 minutes by car.

Arriving at SJU

Flights from the US mainland land as domestic arrivals, with no customs to clear: from the gate you go to baggage claim and out. Taxis wait outside the terminals on the arrivals level, where airport dispatchers give you the fare before you set off, and rideshare cars such as Uber collect from marked spots on the ground floor of Terminals A and B. Around 14 car rental companies work from the airport, so a car can be booked ahead or picked up on arrival. On a late flight home, the luggage storage service on the arrival level holds bags after checkout and frees the last afternoon for the beach.

Isla Verde's beach

Discover Puerto Rico splits the beach into three parts: Pine Grove, where locals surf; El Alambique, a more relaxed stretch; and Balneario de Carolina at the east end, the public beach with lifeguards and paramedics, showers, a volleyball court and a small water park for children. From mid-August to mid-May the balneario closes on Mondays unless it is a holiday, and it opens daily in summer. Beyond it, across the Torrecilla lagoon in neighbouring Loíza, the Piñones forest has a boardwalk trail for walking and cycling, with food kiosks along PR-187.

The residential side

Away from the beach, Carolina is a large, lived-in city of family houses and low-rise streets, and some homes here sit in those neighbourhoods, close to the airport or further inland. They trade a beach view for quiet streets and a parking space of their own, and they suit travellers with a car. From these streets the airport is about 10 minutes by car and Old San Juan about 20 minutes by car. Upper-floor units are often reached by an outdoor staircase.

Evenings and the season

Evenings in Isla Verde centre on the hotel strip, with restaurants, bars and casinos along the beach, while the inland streets stay quiet at night. June to November is hurricane season, when it pays to keep an eye on the forecast.

Who it suits

Carolina suits short stays, late arrivals and early flights, beach days with lifeguards at the balneario, and drivers who want parking without a hunt. It suits less well travellers who want colonial streets or restaurants within walking distance of an inland home; Old San Juan or Condado fit those plans better. Carolina is known as the Tierra de Gigantes, the Land of Giants, a nod to local figures such as Roberto Clemente and the poet Julia de Burgos.
