What kind of outdoor space do these rentals have?

Outdoor space at RentInPR's homes depends on the neighborhood. In the old city it is usually a balcony over the street, a patio inside the old walls or a private roof terrace; in Santurce, Ocean Park and Carolina, patios, gardens and small backyards; in the Condado and Luquillo towers, a balcony high above the sea or the city.

Most of these spaces are for your group alone, but not all. In a few Santurce buildings the courtyard, garden or backyard is shared between apartments, and the descriptions say so; Maré's listing is explicit that the apartment has no balcony or patio of its own, only the building's shared garden and lounge.

Where the views are

For a view, height does the work: High-Rise Condado Suite's ninth-floor balcony looks over the skyline, Captain's Beachfront faces the ocean from high in a Luquillo tower, and OceanSide's patio in Isla Verde looks out to sea. In the old city, Royal Imperial lists an ocean view. In Dorado, the two-bedroom villa's balcony looks over the lake.

Rules that reach the balcony

House rules apply outside as well as in. El Balcón Art Loft treats its balcony as indoors for smoking and asks for no noise out there after 10 p.m.; Villa Blanca sends smokers to a side patio with fans and café lights. Captain's Beachfront asks guests not to sit on, lean on or climb its balcony railings, and on Villa Mansion's roof the marked glass panel over the fountain room is not load-bearing, so it must not be walked on.

Shade, grills and evenings outside

For midday shade, look for the covered patios: SunJoy and MoonJoy in Carolina each have one behind a bamboo privacy screen, and the Dorado villa's patio lounge has a ceiling fan. The backyard of a Santurce two-bedroom near Ocean Park Beach sits under a tropical tree. Where a patio comes with a grill it is usually electric, as in that backyard, on another patio nearby and on the Dorado balcony, while Puerto House adds a fire pit to its garden. Patios can draw the odd mosquito, as The Galleria House's own listing points out.
