You’ll find open plazas, pastel buildings, iron-balcony details and a local feel even while being in a tourist-friendly zone.  The area combines residential calm with cafés, galleries, restaurants and walking paths near the waterfront.  Because of the age and style of the neighborhood, expect some historic quirks: narrow lanes, uneven surfaces, occasional street sounds, and buildings with character that modern structures don’t replicate.

Walking is one of the best ways to experience Old San Juan. The area is compact and highly walkable, especially if you’re staying in or near the central core.  Taxi, rideshare (Uber/Lyft) and local bike rentals are convenient for trips beyond the immediate area.  Public bus service is available (AMA) and offers low-cost routes into and around San Juan, but the stops and schedules may not be as direct or frequent as in more urban destinations.  Driving and parking can be challenging: narrow historic streets, limited free parking, and city regulations you must follow. Street parking is available but guests should read posted signs and expect city enforcement.
