Staying in Santurce

Santurce is San Juan's largest and most populous district, filling the long stretch of city between Old San Juan and Isla Verde. A stay here is a residential one: the homes sit either a short walk from the beach, by Condado and Ocean Park, or on inland blocks nearer La Placita, the old market square that becomes one of the city's most popular nights out.

Which side you pick changes the trip. The homes nearest the sea are 3 to 8 minutes' walk from the sand. The inland ones are 17 to 22 minutes on foot from La Placita, and a short drive from the beach.

The beach next door

Santurce's sea side runs into Ocean Park, the residential beach district between Condado and Isla Verde, and its beach, the largest in the city, starts at Parque del Indio on the Condado side, a short walk from the homes nearest the sea. For a beach with lifeguards on duty, Balneario El Escambrón lies to the west and Balneario de Carolina to the east.

Stairs, parking and power

Many apartments here are second- or third-floor walk-ups with no lift, so check the floor before booking if stairs or heavy bags are a problem; the condo buildings near the beach are the ones with lifts, pools and, in some cases, a backup generator. Parking is usually free on the street but first come, first served, with signs and meters to watch. Listings here mention that brief power or water cuts can happen and are usually fixed quickly, which is worth remembering between June and November, the Atlantic hurricane season.

Nights around La Placita

La Placita is a produce market by day, and after dark the streets around it fill with bars, restaurants, salsa and live bands. Discover Puerto Rico names Thursday to Saturday as the liveliest nights, recommends a taxi or rideshare because parking there is hard, and notes that San Juan limits alcohol service to 1 a.m. from Sunday to Thursday and 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Keep to the busy, well-lit streets around the plaza late at night, as you would in any city. Many homes are in quiet residential buildings with house rules against parties.

Who it suits

Santurce suits people who travel for food and music, longer stays, and families who want an apartment within a beach walk. It suits less well anyone who needs step-free access, since walk-ups are common, or who wants historic streets outside the door. Old San Juan is about 13 minutes by car, and SJU airport about 11 minutes by car.
