Staying in Luquillo

Staying in Luquillo means beach days, rainforest mornings and dinners at the roadside food kiosks. The airport is about 35 minutes by car.

Locals call it La Capital del Sol, the capital of the sun. The homes here sit at the water's edge or a short walk from it, so the beach is part of every day.

Which beach

Playa Azul and La Pared run along the front of the town, and Discover Puerto Rico describes La Pared as a beginner-friendly surf beach with a sandy bottom and waves of about three to five feet; it is a surf break, not a place for a swim. For calm, shallow water, go to Balneario La Monserrate at the west end of town, a long crescent run by the island's natural resources department and lined with lifeguards, with showers, picnic areas and a campground. The kiosks are right beside it.

El Yunque from Luquillo

El Yunque's main recreation road, PR-191, starts in neighbouring Río Grande. In its February 2026 notice the Forest Service said entry to that corridor was free, with no reservation needed, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; check the Forest Service's conditions page before you go.

Fajardo's bioluminescent lagoon

Luquillo is also the easy base for Laguna Grande, the bioluminescent lagoon in Fajardo and one of Puerto Rico's three glowing bays. The lagoon is about 25 minutes by car from the homes here, against 67 minutes from Old San Juan, which counts when the trip ends after dark. You go out by kayak or small boat, swimming is not allowed, and the glow shows best on nights with little or no moon, so book ahead for a dark night. The lagoon lies inside Las Cabezas de San Juan Nature Reserve, where Para la Naturaleza guides visits to the restored lighthouse of 1880. Seven Seas, Fajardo's crescent-shaped public beach, has calm water, shade, restrooms and showers. It is about 19 minutes by car from the homes here.

Getting around and nights

Rideshare does reach Luquillo, but listings here warn that availability varies, especially at weekends, so most guests rent a car; the homes include parking. The kiosks along PR-3 are busiest at weekends. The Ceiba ferry terminal for Vieques and Culebra is further east, near Fajardo. Old San Juan is about 46 minutes by car.

Who it suits

Luquillo suits beach-and-rainforest trips, families who want calm water with lifeguards nearby, beginner surfers, and anyone happy to drive. It suits less well travellers who want city nightlife on foot or plan to spend most days in Old San Juan. The coast from Luquillo to Fajardo is a nature reserve where leatherback turtles can turn up at certain times of year. Between June and November, the hurricane season, check the forecast and the Forest Service alerts before a rainforest day.
