El Yunque is the only tropical rainforest in the US National Forest System and one of Puerto Rico's must-visit destinations. Located about 45 minutes east of San Juan, it is an easy day trip from your vacation rental. Here is everything you need to know.
Reservation System
Since 2023, El Yunque requires advance reservations. Book online at recreation.gov for $2 per person. Reservations open 30 days in advance and popular time slots (morning) sell out fast during peak season. Book as soon as your travel dates are confirmed.
Best Trails
La Mina Falls Trail (Moderate): The most popular trail. A 45-minute hike each way through lush rainforest ending at a beautiful waterfall with a swimming hole at the base. Bring a swimsuit and water shoes. The trail has steps and can be slippery.
Juan Diego Trail (Moderate to Challenging): Less crowded than La Mina with equally stunning waterfalls. Multiple swimming holes along the way. Our personal favorite for a more authentic rainforest experience.
Mt. Britton Tower Trail (Moderate): A 30-minute hike to a stone observation tower with panoramic views of the forest and coastline. Best done on a clear morning.
Angelito Trail (Easy): A short, accessible trail leading to a gentle stream and small swimming area. Perfect for families with young children or anyone who wants a quick rainforest taste without a major hike.
La Coca Falls (No Hike Required): Visible from the road. A dramatic 85-foot waterfall you can photograph without leaving your car. Great for those with limited mobility.
What to Bring
Water shoes or hiking sandals (trails are slippery), rain jacket (it is a RAINforest, it will rain), swimsuit and towel, bug spray, reef-safe sunscreen, water bottle, and a dry bag for your phone. Leave valuables in your car or better yet, in your vacation rental.
Insider Tips
Arrive before 9am for fewer crowds and better parking. It rains almost every afternoon, so morning visits are ideal. Combine your El Yunque trip with a stop at the Luquillo food kiosks on your way back to San Juan (15 minutes away). The seafood alcapurrias and fresh coconut water after a hot hike is perfection.
